Helen Stephenson, one of our talented A-level art students, has been working on this portrait. The painting was inspired by images of Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head last October while traveling home on the school bus. Malala was targeted by the Taliban because of her ongoing campaigning for girls’ education and “promoting secularism“.
She began writing an anonymous blog for BBC Urdu at aged 11, in which she described life under the Taliban.
Her love for education and her courage in standing up against the Taliban has made her an icon of bravery and a symbol for the struggle for women’s rights in Pakistan.
She was awarded the “2012 Tipperary International Peace Award”, the Pakistan National Youth Peace Prize and the Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women’s Freedom. Tens of thousands of people have also signed a petition calling for Malala to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
