Pupils attend The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures

On Tuesday 16th December a group of students and teachers headed off to watch the filming of The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in London. The lectures, which present scientific subjects to a general audience in an informative and entertaining manner, have been given every year since they began in 1825, stopping only from 1939  to 1942, during the blitz in World War II when it was too dangerous for children to come into central London. Since 1966 they have been broadcast on TV.

With a little bit of time to spare after arriving in London, we first visited The Grant Museum of Zoology, where we were able to inspect a rather large collection of zoological specimens – 67,000 to be exact!

Following a quick refuel with some delicious Mexican food we then took our seats to watch the filming of the third show of the science series. Led by Professor Danielle George, this year’s theme for the Christmas Lectures was ‘How to hack your home’, featuring a variety of robots who formed an orchestra to entertain the audience.

The first episode of the series can be seen on BBC4 on Monday 29th December at 8pm. The second episode will be shown on the Tuesday evening and the final episode will be shown on New Year’s Eve.

As HOHS should feature in the third episode, don’t forget to set your recorders to save the final installment on Wednesday!
