Free Pre-Christmas treat: Lights in Lynn!

With Christmas only a few days away, our HOHS families are doubtless busy with preparations. But if you’re looking for a pre-Christmas family outing – or perhaps have last-minute shopping to do and can’t face the city crowds – why not go west and hit King’s Lynn in the late afternoon or evening to see the historical town lit up in spectacular, festive splendour?

‘Lynn Lumière’ has seen French-designed illuminations light up the town since Spring this year, funded by the European Union Interreg IVA programme. Currently, from dusk until 10pm every evening, six of the town’s famous buildings are transformed with amazing animated light shows depicting Lynn’s heritage and history. Five of the illuminations are Christmas-themed and two include scenes (with sound!) from classic Disney films, while others have been specially commissioned to represent a joyous Christmas spirit.

You can find out more and see videos here.

Fond farewells to our ‘gappies’!

Our three  popular gap year students, Laura Whiteley, Gemma Erdelyi-Gotz and  Olivia Leontiades,  joined us from Australia and Tasmania at the beginning of January last year and quickly became part of the team at HOHS.  Thoroughly immersing themselves  in school life – classrooms,  boarding house and office –  they gained lots of  varied and useful experience in their year with us. They certainly won the hearts of staff and pupils alike!  As Miss Cushing, Senior House Mistress says, “the girls have been  brilliant!  They arrived as staff and leave as family”.
Today, after enjoying some free time  in Germany, where they visited some of the famous Christmas markets,  they return to London to take the long flights back to their homes down under.  By a strange coincidence,  although the girls had not met before arriving at HOHS, they are now all off to university in the same city – Melbourne.

We wish the girls all the very best for the future and offer our thanks for the wonderful contribution they have made to our school life.

Stick Man adventures for Year 1

Many of our younger pupils will doubtless be tuning in on Christmas Day to see Stick Man come to life. The popular and heart-warming story by Gruffalo creator Julia Donaldson is being animated with a sterling cast of famous British actors, including Martin Freeman, Rob Brydon and Hugh Bonneville, with Jennifer Saunders narrating.

Meanwhile, at HOHS, Mrs Bird is planning some Stick Man adventures for Years 1 and 2 next term with the help of two exciting new activity books she has ordered, pictured below. The fun projects will be relevant to our English, art and craft and science curriculum and will start with a nature ramble in our gardens to find sticks for the children to make their own stick men….

You can watch and listen to Julia Donaldson reading the original Stick Man story here.
