Kennings riddles by Year 4

In poetry Year 4 have been learning about Kennings. They are like ‘mini riddles’ and describe something without saying exactly what it is. The word ‘Kenning’ is derived from an old Norse word which means to ‘describe something in terms of another.’

The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons enjoyed word play and described their swords as ‘skull-splitters’. Even today we use Kennings in every day speech – ‘sky-scrapers’ and ‘gold-diggers’.
