On Thursday, the chess players in Years 4 – 6 enjoyed a workshop run by Stephen Orton. Stephen Orton is not only an excellent player but also runs the Norwich and Norfolk Chess Club and organises many tournaments around the county.
During chess club, he gave the pupils tips on the opening principles of a game and how to look out for ‘forks’ and ‘pins’. Mr Orton also spoke to the pupils about different ways to get checkmate, including ‘Scholar’s mate’… the 4-move checkmate! Hopefully the children can practise what they learnt at Chess Club next year and can share their knowledge with any new players!
Note to parents: there is a chess tournament for children to enter individually on Saturday 2nd July. There are sections in the tournament for all abilities. Please contact Miss Hopwood if you would like an entry form.
