A Night at the Opera

On Tuesday evening Mrs Greene led an A Level music trip to the Theatre Royal to see Glyndebourne’s touring production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, an opera that blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements. For this production, the setting was in a vaguely 1950s or early 60s era and it was a performance that totally engaged the audience in the drama. The centrepiece of the staging was a revolving cube providing a variety of quick-change locations such as the corner of a building, the inside of Don Giovanni’s palazzo and the graveyard where the Commendatore lies in the process of being buried. Afterwards, Charlie said “I really enjoyed the performance, especially the stunning pyrotechnics: they were so well thought out in the final scene where Don Giovanni goes to hell!”
