Huge congratulations go to to Miss Mickleburgh, whose Harleston Magpies hockey team was crowned Mixed National Champions 2017 on Sunday.
Miss Mickleburgh told us: “The road to the finals was tough; we had to beat teams from Bedford, Bourne Deeping, Letchworth, Dereham and Horsham along the way in earlier rounds. This weekend we travelled to the Lee Valley Olympic Park for the finals. On Saturday we took on Spencer, from London, and ran out 4-1 winners. Then on Sunday we played the final against Khalsa from Birmingham. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, which meant it would be decided on shuffles (the hockey equivalent of a penalty shoot out, but more exciting in my biased opinion!). After five shuffle takers, it was still level and the game then goes to ‘sudden death’ …very tense! But then our goalkeeper saved their shuffle – meaning WE WON!!”
The team has been very successful over the last three years, having scooped Gold in 2015 and Bronze last year as well. Look out for reports and more pictures in our local Mercury.
