Celebrating Chinese New Year!

Beatrix and Jessica Reception Chinese New Year

To celebrate the beginning of Chinese New Year, Jessica and Beatrix in our Reception class are wearing beautiful traditional Chinese dress this mroning and have distributed red packets to all their classmates.

The colour of red symbolises energy and good fortune for Chinese – and red packets are traditionally given to children as new year gifts to bring good luck for the coming year.

The new year, also known as the Spring Festival, changes its date from year to year according to the Chinese calendar. Festivities continue for two weeks, until the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the new year.

We would like to wish all our families and friends a very happy Chinese New Year 2016  – and a special thank you to Beatrix and Jessica and their  parents for helping us to celebrate in style!

HOHS tops exam tables for GSCE results

We are delighted to see Hethersett Old Hall topping the local schools’ exams tables for 2014.

Although league tables do give an indication of examination passes, they are not a fair guide to a school’s real achievements. In a school with international students such as ours, no allowance is given to those pupils whose first language is not English and who will therefore take a ‘second language’ English IGCSE which is not counted in the tables, which only record pupils who obtain grades in ‘first language’ qualifications.

Also, the size of the cohort matters – in a smaller school, a couple of pupils missing key examinations through illness have a disproportionate effect on percentages. What really matters, I think, is how much pupils grow and develop, gaining confidence and life skills, over the course of their education – league tables don’t measure this!
