Nature’s Riches at HOHS

Mrs Bird’s nature/bird club went on a summer nature scavenger hunt around the school grounds last Wednesday afternoon in the warm sunshine. We saw enormous black crows on the lawn and parent blue tits, and heard blackbirds and robins calling in the orchard.  We met Mr Crump on our hunt and he showed us a photo of two young hedgehogs foraging in his garden, down by the cowslips behind School House.

We also spotted water boatmen and pond skaters in the pond, but sadly no frogs this year as the damsel fly larvae ate the tadpoles last month!

Blackbirds have flown!

Before the holidays we reported that a blackbird’s nest had been found in the hedge at the back of our main lawns, with four beautiful eggs in it.  We had a little peek and then were careful to leave the nest alone. Today, some of the children in Mrs Bird’s class were excited to find that the eggs have all hatched and, as the fledglings have left, the nest is no longer needed, so they brought it over for a photograph!

Bird Club Tweet

In the last week of term, Mia found this blackbird’s nest in the hedge at the back of our main lawns. Bird Club members will be keeping a close eye on it when school starts again, hoping to spot the fledglings soon!

Barn Owl (Tyto alba)Mrs Bird invited Mr Bob O ‘Hanlon from The Raptor Trust to talk to the Prep School about the birds he owns.

He brought with him Dillon and Marley, a beautiful Barn Owl and a Tawny Owl. The children had many questions to ask and Bob was able to tell us plenty of interesting facts about their hearing and eye sight, how owls catch and digest their food and how they separate the meat from the bones, hair, fur or feathers. We are still researching whether or not owls can see in colour.

Bob has kindly offered to visit Bird Club later in the year with his Hawk and there is promise of some more pellets for us to dissect!

Once again Bird Club have been getting messy making lardy cake for the Big Garden Birdwatch on 25th – 26th Jan. This is a chance for all you bird lovers to make your birds count. Spend one hour counting the bird species in your garden and submit your results at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

Last year both starlings and house sparrows hit an all-time low. Amazingly, an American Robin was spotted in the London borough of Peckham! So get your binoculars out, perch yourself by the window and have fun bird spotting this weekend.
