Spring is on its way at HOHS – with a chance to win a prize!

Gardener Andy Young has been hard at work in the gardens, planting new things to provide colour later in the spring and summer.  This week has seen some lovely, warm sunshine and the children can now spend more time outside at break and lunchtimes. With that in mind, here is an opportunity for observant pupils to win some prizes and perhaps learn a bit about plants!

To enter, have a good look round the gardens and see how many flowers and flowering plants you can identify (they don’t have to be in bloom yet), then write down their names and where in the grounds you saw them.  You can ask Mr Young for clues if you find him!

Please bring your list to me in the office just next to Reception  by the end of term, Friday 31st March – I have some fun prizes for top entries! Alternatively, you can email your entry to marketing@hohs.co.uk

Matilda’s our winner…and what else begins with an M…?

Congratulations to Matilda (Year 4) who has won the competition to identify the most tree species within the sixteen acres of our school grounds.  Matilda was awarded a £10 garden centre voucher for correctly identifying the species and their locations listed after the photo below. There are over 35 species growing here altogether…can anyone spot one Matilda has missed, with a name starting with an M, like hers? An additional small prize is available for the first correct answer emailed to marketing@hohs.co.uk (clue…start outside Mr Crump’s window and walk along the paths past the school buildings towards the woods and orchard…)

Reception’s colourful autumn assembly

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who came to see our Reception children present their special Autumn-themed assembly  this morning – we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! The children have been working on ‘Autumn Changes’ as their topic this half term and this was a chance to showcase some of what they have learned.  They have all enjoyed exploring our woods and collecting leaves of all different colours as well as other Autumn treasures such as conkers and acorns. These helped to inspire the children to create the beautiful Autumn-themed artwork they showed us in assembly, and to write the Autumn Changes poem they recited for us:

It’s getting very cold now,
So we must wrap up warm.
Walking in the woods is fun.
We scrunch through all the leaves
That have fallen off the trees.
Red and yellow,
Orange and brown.

Very well done, Reception! Look out for more of the children’s Autumn-themed work on the blog in the next couple of weeks.

Autumn glory at HOHS – and time to win a prize!

In preparation for winter, gardener Andy Young has been busy tidying up our borders, digging up and storing dahlia tubers and keeping the lawns reasonably clear of leaves. In fact, our grounds look particularly beautiful at the moment with the trees displaying their full Autumn colours. But did you know that we have over 35 species of tree within our sixteen acres?

Now is the time to have a good look – and why not try your hand at naming them? There’s a £10 Notcutts voucher waiting for whichever pupil can identify the highest number of  tree species. Notcutts stocks a huge range of toys, books and gifts as well as everything for the garden, so don’t miss out on your chance to win!

Please bring your list, with the names of the trees and where in the HOHS grounds you have identified them, to Liz French, Marketing Officer (in the school office) by Friday 2nd December. Alternatively, you can email your entry to marketing@hohs.co.uk

Sunny Autumn days!

It may be the beginning of November, and the shadows may be longer, but these pictures taken on Monday are a reminder of how warm it can still be at this time of year, and how lucky our children are to be able to work and play outside in our lovely grounds.

The Nursery children were enjoying their snacks, a dinosaur and the toys on wheels.  Ruby and Ellie were writing about their friendship. And Maddy took her turn at ringing the bell between lessons to summon the other children who were playing in the woods!
