Our busy Nursery bees

Our Nursery children have been looking at bees this week.  We have made some hand print painted bees and sung some bee songs.  We looked at the busy work bees do making honey. And we finished off the week by looking at the school bee hive and having a honey sandwich picnic!

Update on the HOHS bees

We were thrilled to see bees back in our hive recently,  after 18 months of it being sadly empty.  Here is our resident beekeeping expert, Mr Johnston, doing a healthcheck on the hive yesterday. In the first picture, he is using a “smoker”, which prompts the bees to return to the Queen and prepare for evacuation, thinking there is a fire! This makes it easier to check (picture 2) on the location of the Queen, whose presence is crucial to the success of the hive. We can happily report that not only is she indeed in residence, but that her busy workers have already produced enough honey to supply the hive till spring. Safety alert:  The hive is safely tucked away out of reach of pupils, who will only be able to see it under strict and expert supervision.
