Boarders visit Colchester Zoo

Last weekend our boarders went to Colchester Zoo and came face to face with giraffes, an orangutan and more.

Colchester Zoo is rated on the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Attractions Awards as the eleventh best zoo in the world and in the top two zoos in the UK! With over 270 species to see, the boarders enjoyed a fabulous day. A highlight was feeding time with the giraffes. See more photos from the trip.

Boarders visit Cambridge

On Saturday 13th June our boarders took a day trip to Cambridge.

Despite the weather being less than perfect we had a great time in the warm and cosy train. First stop was the Fudge Kitchen where we saw the fudge being cooled and set. They were really nice to us and we got to taste both the warm vanilla fudge and the cooled chocolate fudge.

Then it was off to the punts for a relaxing 45 minute trip on the River Cam. It turned out to be something of an adventure as a duck decided to hitch a lift and then another punt crashed into us and lots of water came in the boat too! We had some really warm rugs to snuggle up under and the rain had stopped so it was a great trip and the ideal time to eat lunch as the various sights were being pointed out to us.

After an hour examining the famous market it was back onto the bus for the short trip to the station. The train home was empty so we made the most of so much space and some of us even had a cheeky nap!

Year 10 explore Cambridge

Last Wednesday our Year 10 group enjoyed an art-themed trip to Cambridge to visit the world-renowned Fitzwilliam Museum and the MAA (Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology).

Both museums were really interesting. We looked at lots of artefacts from around the world – India, Japan and Egypt – which were relevant to our art projects and did some tasks that will help our studies. The photography students went off round the city to take pictures for their portfolios.

It was a really interesting and enjoyable trip – including the excellent ice cream!

Art inspiration in Cambridge

Last Friday our Sixth Form girls studying art, photography and textiles visited galleries in Cambridge to research exam topics and collect ideas for their work.

Firstly we visited the Fitzwilliam Museum to explore their wide-ranging collections of modern and historic art. We then went to the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology where students were able to find lots of inspiration from the vast collection of artefacts from around the world.

Girl Power: Women in Science

scienceLast week some of our Year 11 and Year 12 pupils attended the GSA Girl Power: Women in Science conference, hosted by St Mary’s School in Cambridge.

During the visit the girls attended a series of lectures looking at careers in science. They also took part in a breakout session which they had selected. These included an insight into the NHS, materials science and a discussion with a panel of prominent female scientists.

Although it was a long day with plenty to take in, we hope our students were all inspired by at least one of the lecturers and that they are now considering the many benefits of studying science at A Level and degree level.

After all, the science department are very proud of our students at HOHS and we’d love the opportunity to bring our pupils to one of their lectures in the future!
