Year 9 textiles

Last half term our Year 9 girls enjoyed a brief introduction to garment making with Mrs Ling and produced these wrap-over skirts. They have been surprised how important the key skills of accuracy and attention to detail are on even a simple shape.

Congratulations to Mollie D (Year 11), overall winner of our Christmas card design competition. Mollie’s colourful snowman-making scene will grace our printed cards, delivered later this week. With just a simple “Season’s Greetings” message inside, the cards are ideal to send to friends and family and will be on sale for £1 each or in packs of five for £4 including envelopes if you would like to buy some. Ask at Reception!

Worthy runners-up, in joint second place, were Harry T (Reception) and Izzy W (Year 6), whose designs are also shown here. Well done to them, and to all who entered – we had some excellent designs this year!

Who is busy with their HOHS Christmas card design?

A reminder that we are looking for a colourful design to grace the HOHS Christmas cards this year –  and pupils need to get their entries in by next Wednesday, 15th November.  The design can be in crayon, pencil, paint or any other media,  and feature anything Christmas-related, but it must be:

  • square (the printed cards will be square not rectangular)
  • on white paper

The winner will have their design printed on our own HOHS Christmas card and receive ten of the cards and envelopes for their own family.

Stone Age assembly for Year 5

An audience of family members and the other Prep School classes enjoyed an imaginatively-performed and action-packed assembly from Year 5 this morning. The children showcased some of the work they have been doing for their Stone Age history studies, including making models of Stonehenge, recreating cave paintings and composing a poem about our distant ancestors. They displayed excellent knowledge of all aspects of life in the Stone Ages, from hunting to housing, tool-making to clothing. Afterwards,  the children shared some moments with their proud families. Well done, Year 5, and thanks to the family members who came to watch!

Stone Age buildings and dinosaur bones

As part of their Stone Age history studies Year 5 have started to design and construct their own Stone Age houses, using a variety of materials they sourced from the woods. Any budding young palaeontologists please note: the bones littering the gardens of these houses were created in the DT room, so please don’t start digging for dinosaur skeletons around the school grounds – Mr Young would not be very pleased! When the houses are finished they will look like the one in the bottom picture.
