You’ve got a friend in Year 1!

Year 1 and Mrs Bird presented a wonderful class assembly this morning! The focus was on the children’s history topics, so they told us all about toys from the last century. showing us some of their own favourites from today as well as some special ones lent to them for the class ‘museum corner’ by grandparents. The children also displayed some stunning three-dimensional artwork and puppets they had made… all with a backdrop of  images from their trip to the Bridewell Museum earlier this term.  The song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” was a great addition to a lovely assembly, and of course there were special moments with family and friends afterwards, too. Well done, Year 1!

Look out for the full gallery of pictures in the next couple of days!

Year 1 trip to Bridewell…the gallery!

Last week we reported briefly on Year 1’s fantastic trip to the Bridewell in Norwich. At this treasure trove of a museum, they explored all kinds of items from the last hundred years or so, such as mangles, shoes, games and even Christmas crackers! The main focus was on toys, though, and the children were able to look at and handle toys from the past, compare them to ones from present day and – as a link to our science topic – talk about the different materials they are made from. They sorted, drew and made a climbing man puppet each and enjoyed their lunch in the prison yard.  The children are now busy learning songs and poems about toys for their toy-themed assembly next half term on Tuesday November 7th.

Year 1 Pets’ Week!

Mrs Bird has made this a special “Pets’ Week” for her Year 1 class, with the children invited to bring in their small pets  (and photos and information about larger ones!)

Today we had a visit from Amy’s six-month old guinea pig ‘Angel’ and Sophia’s hamster ‘Stripe’ – and Year 2 children came to have a look, too. The children learned a lot about how Amy and Sofia care for their pets.

Angel enjoyed a lot of gentle attention, as you can see, while Stripe was sleeping in his cage. Sophia explained that hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day. Stripe is a special kind of hamster, a Winter White.  He is grey with a stripe in the summer but his fur turns white in winter. This is because in Russia – where this kind of hamster lives in the wild – he would need to be camouflaged in the snow to avoid predators!

Look out for more pet reports later in the week!

The Early Years visit Wroxham Barns

On Tuesday 10th March the Nursery and Reception children had a fantastic day out at Wroxham Barns.

We all had a wonderful day and enjoyed lovely sunny weather. The children learnt all about  the different animals on the farm and the different types of food they eat. They all enjoyed bottle feeding the spring lambs in the barn and feeding the hens, cows, donkeys, sheep and goats around the farm. All the children understood the very important message about washing hands after touching the animals before we had our lunch in the school room.

After lunch we went to watch the pigs being fed before going to the hen house to collect the eggs. Everyone had the opportunity to collect an egg and put it in the basket. We spotted lots of different birds on the pond and fed the swans and ducks.

Last but not least we were able to sit on bales of straw in the barn and cuddle the chicks and guinea pigs .

The children were all extremely well behaved and it was lovely to be told by another visitor how impressed she was by our childrens’ behaviour.
