HOHS gains Bronze Eco-School Status

We recently reported how Year 12 student Maisie A  has been working to earn the school a bronze Eco-Schools award. We are pleased to announce that this status has now been achieved. Well done, Maisie! In her own words, here’s how she did it, with the help of staff and pupils:

“To reach the bronze award we had to complete three simple steps: form an eco-committee, undertake an environmental review and complete an action plan. Since then, we have begun to make changes in school. So far we have placed recycling bins in classrooms and have put up signs to remind both pupils and teachers to turn lights and computers off when no one is in the room. I have also produced an eco-notice board to display the action plan and environmental review – you can see it on the stairs just outside the library.”

The next stage on Maisie’s Mission is to complete the silver award. More of this later!

Maisie on a Mission!

Year 12 student Maisie A is passionate about the environment.  She writes:

“After Christmas I began working on the Eco-Schools project –  a global programme engaging millions of children, improving their environmental awareness through a seven-step process. Stages 1-3 enable you to reach a bronze award, stages 4-6 lead to a silver award and on completing stage 7, you are awarded a green flag.

I have formed an eco-committee, which involves one or two pupils from every year group from Years 3 – 12; we have started meeting once every half-term to discuss how we could improve the school environmentally. I have also surveyed the school,  outlining the areas which might be improved. Since doing this I have formed an action plan, with help from those on the eco-committee, and now am aiming to reach the bronze  award. This term I will be trying to introduce some ideas to make the school more environmentally friendly; for example encouraging recycling and finding ways to become more energy efficient.”
