Year 1 go down to Willow Farm

Last Wednesday, Year 1 and Mrs Bird had a fantastic day out  at Willow Farm, home of Amy T (Year 2). The children learned about many different aspects of farming  – from bees to cattle and crops – at the mixed farm which adjoins the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s  Hickling reserve. Highlights were undoubtedly the ride on the trailer and calling for Boris the Bull (who did turn up)!

Amy’s father is a previous award winner of the national Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group’s Silver Lapwing Award, achieved for the environmentally friendly approach to farming adopted at Willow Farm.  Many thanks to the Tallowin family for a wonderful trip!

Year 1 down on the farm…

Year 1 enjoyed a wonderful day at the Tallowin family’s Willow Farm in Hickling last Wednesday and learned an amazing number of new things! They had a good look at the huge combine harvester and found out how it works,  handled different crops and went on a tractor trailer journey to see the cows on nearby marshland, and Boris the bull. They spent some time pond dipping, investigating and naming a variety of mini-beasts, pond creatures and plants.  The children were shown a live collection of moths and bird-ringing of birds that migrate (one teal had flown from Russia and one from Sweden to England in eight days!) They had a go at potato picking, learned the difference between wheat and barley and saw the fava beans crop that Mr Tallowin sells to Egypt for making the traditional Ful Medames dish.

Since the trip, the children have been busy making booklets to record their journey of the day.  They have also each created a ‘memory sticky board’ with some of the seeds, feathers, petals, leaves, beans and plants they collected on their journey.

Thank you to all of Amy’s family and friends for making this such a special trip for us. See the full gallery of pictures here.
