“We are stardust…”

Year 8 have been investigating fascinating facts about atoms and matter.  Did you know that the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our bodies were created in previous generations of stars over 4.5 billion years ago?  Humans and every other animal as well as most of the matter on Earth contain these elements…so we are literally made of star stuff…!

Year 8 Science: a great year!

From exploring sound through making their own musical instruments to growing microbes, learning distillation processes, bending light and undertaking ecological and biodiversity studies…Year 8 had a fabulous year in science! They even enjoyed some mindfulness sessions (you can try one of the activities for yourself here!)

Year 8 science: why your mother was right…

Year 8 have been using petri dishes prepared with nutrient agar to reveal the bacteria hiding all around us…. look at the microbes they have grown !

You can also link to a short video that demonstrates how quickly bacteria multiply from swabs taken from a TV remote –  proving your mum was right every time she said “now wash your hands!”

Nautilus the Penguin update

The boarders held their cake sale last Tuesday which turned out to be a huge success. We raised £51 towards the adoption of the much adored Nautilus the Penguin. We would like to say a big thank you to Mrs. Swallow, Miss Mann, Mrs. Collin and Mr. Reeves who baked delicious cakes for us to sell.

Our next project to help us raise the £125 needed for the adoption is the selling of hand-made Christmas cards and gift tags at school events. We would like to thank the parents and staff that bought items from us at the Year 7 and 8 Progress Evening last night.

We now have just over half of the money we need to pick up a penguin!
