Successful expedition for our Golden girls!

Posing with our assessor. We all passed!

The stunning Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons looked very inviting on Saturday against a bright blue sky as our D of E Gold group set off to trek up the mountain on Day 1 of their challenging four-day expedition. The steepness of the hill was daunting in the extreme heat but the girls – Kelly, Maisie, Alice and Tayla – coped really well, with the help of extra water, hats, sun cream, long- sleeved shirts and neckerchiefs, and by taking the climb slowly before walking along the ridge. The views were spectacular along the top and the girls were able to draw some interesting pictures and write great stories for their book.

After a tiring but extremely successful day the group set up camp in the farmer’s field to cook themselves a well-deserved pasta supper.

Day 2 began at 5am so as to beat the heat on another strenuous climb.  The girls did very well and were really enjoying the views when we met them at the top.  Arriving at their campsite they  were greeted with the welcome sight of their own stream – perfect for cooling tired feet!

On Day 3, the girls ventured out at 4am under a still starry sky, to miss the heat of yet another scorching summer day. Passing many waterfalls, they  made their way to the top of the mountain and walked along the ridge where they enjoyed spectacular views of two different valleys, one with a reservoir.  On the way down they could see their goal, the ruined Llanthony Abbey.

The last day was cloudier and cooler than the other three but the girls still decided to start out at 4am. The assessor was very impressed with the group, praising their navigation skills and team work and declaring them a delight to assess, thoroughly deserving of the passes he awarded all four.

Today we are travelling home – and in cooler conditions. Well done everyone – you were superb! Now click on the images to see the gallery of photos….

13 years of D of E success at HOHS

badge-gold_1In the last 13 years, over 370 girls from HOHS have achieved bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, with 82 gaining the gold.

No fewer than thirteen of our sixth formers received their gold awards at the annual presentation at Sandringham last year – more than any other school within the Norfolk County Council area.

These are rigorous awards involving a variety of tough challenges and are valuable additions to girls’ CVs and UCAS applications.

Mrs Grove and other members of staff work tirelessly to make this a really rewarding part of the senior girls’ experience at HOHS.

Successful expedition for Gold D of E girls

Nine students and three staff braved the wilds of Norfolk for a one-day Gold Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition in readiness for their trip to the Brecon Beacons.

Although most of the students had not tried D of E before, they were all game and soon realised the importance of bearings and following the route carefully.

Well done everybody.

Six Gold D of E girls head to the palace

A bright sunny morning greeted our six Gold award holders from HOHS as they approached the entrance to St James’ Palace for the presentation ceremony.

badge-gold_1Walking through the palace was very interesting and when we reached our allotted area we were given some history of the room: it was here that Nelson Mandela met the Queen and that William and Kate’s official engagement photographs were taken.

As we awaited the arrival of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, our VIP guest Jim Rosenthal entertained us with stories of his life as a sports presenter and amusing tales of his own Gold award, achieved in the mid-1960s. We also met David Walliams!

At the ‘three minute warning’ we all stood up and before long the giant doors opened and Prince Philip entered. He was introduced to the room marshals, including our very own Mrs Grove, and then spent nine minutes talking to the students. His quick wit and response to students’ comments had everyone in the room laughing.

After HRH left, photos were taken and the certificates were presented by Jim Rosenthal.

We all had a wonderful time and it was good to catch up with former pupils Kelsey, Rina, Daniele, Angel, Kirsty and Isabel – congratulations to them all!

Any budding chefs?

We have received information about a summer residential cooking school – Teencooks – which we are happy to pass on.

Teencooks offers a week of hands-on cooking in the heart of France for small groups (five or six) of 15-18 year olds. The course is run by experienced teacher Shirley Midge and can be used towards the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award, either in the new skills or residential category.

If anyone is interested please either see me or go to the website www.teencooks.co.uk
