Team player of the season: Sophie’s hockey highlights

Talented hockey player Sophie B  (Year 10) has had an exceptional season with her club, Norwich Dragons. Her Ladies 3’s Team won the Empresa Norfolk Women’s Hockey League Premier Division this season and will now be promoted into the East Women’s League, and towards the end of the season Sophie also played a number of matches for the Ladies 2’s Team who already play in the East Women’s League and missed out on promotion by a solitary point.

Last Saturday evening at the club’s annual awards at Sprowston Manor, Sophie was voted Ladies 3’s Team Player of the Season by her team mates.  A great end to her first season in ladies hockey as part of a fantastic club!

On Sunday Sophie and 15 team mates represented Norfolk in the Girls U15 East Region Hockey Championships at the UEA Sportspark against six other counties. The team and coaches have been together for three seasons now and having won in 2016 and come 2nd in 2017, they prevailed again this year to reclaim the title as 2018 champions. A great result from a talented bunch of hockey players and coaches with huge team spirit, a great will to win and a determination to play for each other.

Well done, Sophie!

Sports update: no Hockey Club today

Pupils have already been made aware that there will be no hockey club this afternoon owing to our netball fixture (watch this space for a match report!) – and any hockey club members who are not involved in the netball are welcome to stay for other after school activities, of course.

Miss Mickleburgh’s Half term Hockey Report

Having spoken to a number of members of staff who have taught at HOHS for many years, we have concluded that this term of hockey has been one of the most successful the school has ever had! What an incredible achievement by all the pupils, who should be very proud of the progress they have made.

In total and as a school we have played 26 hockey matches, securing 16 wins! A number of highlights include the U16 and U12 team winning 1-0 over Wymondham College A teams and the U13 and U16 team being undefeated until the last game of the season.

Miss Mickleburgh’s Half term Hockey Report

It has been a glorious half term of hockey at HOHS. The progress made across the school in comparison to last year is highly evident and the pupils should be highly commended on their efforts. This time last year we had played five fixtures securing just one win. This year we have played fifteen fixtures to date, securing eight victories!

Scroll down for some great team and action shots!

Our year group top scorers are as follows:

Year 2: Felicity

Year 3: Adam

Year 7: Liberty-Moon

Year 8: Harriet

Year 9: Faith-Marie

Year 11: Ella

Some highlights:

  • Our Year 2s playing their first ever game of hockey in the U8A/B matches and one team winning with goals from Felicity and Adam.
  • Our U13, U14A and U16 team being unbeaten so far this season.
  • Rosamaria in Year 9 playing a brilliant role as goal keeper for the U14A/B teams.
  • Harriet in Year 8 top scoring for the school with six goals.

Looking forward, we have a busy second half term ahead with all teams involved in a number of matches. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters who have come along and cheered for our teams, it makes such a difference having such enthusiastic support, thank you!

A number of parents have been asking me about the purchasing of hockey sticks and astro turf shoes. Firstly, we have hockey sticks that pupils can borrow so buying a hockey stick is not essential however; if you are looking to get your child a stick you must make sure it is the correct size! The top of the hockey stick must be in line with the child’s hip height. Any higher or lower will affect the child’s ability to play. As we have a number of matches away on astro and on grass surfaces, astro turf shoes are something you may wish to consider, but once again this is not essential. Astro turf shoes provide additional grip on synthetic surfaces and protection from the ball. Normal trainers provide no protection from impact from the hockey ball and can cause quite a lot of pain, particularly if you have been hit on the toes.

Finally, we have a number of pupils who are now members of hockey clubs outside of school. If you wish to find out more about local hockey clubs in the area please feel free to call or email me or the school.

Sports Update: U15 rounders team no longer playing today

ONLY the U13 rounders team will now be taking part in the match today against Taverham High. The U15 Taverham High team have pulled out of the match and therefore conceded the fixture.

The U13 match will still be weather dependent.
