Boarders visit the pantomime

Oh no they didn’t! Oh yes they did!

The first week back after Christmas is the traditional Pantomime trip, this year to see Jack and the Beanstalk at the Theatre Royal in Norwich. The girls had a wonderful time and threw themselves into the singing and joking with great enthusiasm. Everyone was delighted to hear Hethersett Old Hall School’s name called out, and gave a rousing cheer. The growing of the beanstalk was particularly brilliant and the girls spent ages trying to work out “how they did it”. We were also thrilled to see a former pupil, Sarah Farmer, who, having studied drama at HOHS, has now taken up a career in theatrical lighting.

Boarders down in the Jungle

Last weekend our Boarders decided it was time to test the skills of the film critics and see for themselves if the new version of Jungle Book really was as good as was being reported….and the verdict was a resounding “YES”!

Mr Peace bravely sat with us as we jumped at the jumpy bits and hummed along to the songs we all know and love.

Miss Cushing thinks that Olivia and Sofia may have actually broken her fingers as she unwisely held their hands in the scary bits! It’s a must-see film and a great ‘last trip’ before the sixth formers go on study leave after the Exeat.

Boarders visit the pantomime

Oh no they didn’t! Oh yes they did!

When the  boarders  went to see the Pantomime at the Theatre Royal last weekend, they certainly weren’t Sleepy or Grumpy! (Yes, you’ve guessed it, it was  Snow White). It was a fantastic performance and everyone came out with aching sides and faces from laughing so much. Somehow the big surprise of this production – that the seven dwarves were actually puppets – had been kept, so everyone was duly amazed. The girls were even given this wonderful poster, signed by all the cast, as a souvenir of their visit.

Traditional Carol Service fills St Remigius…

IMG_7706

St Remigius parish church was filled with family and friends of HOHS this afternoon for our carol service, led by Reverend Derek McClean. Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl and Senior Boarder Alex, Emily-Jayne and Shannon led the procession to the choir stalls for the traditional carols and readings, which were interspersed with some musical delights from our choirs and musicians. A particular highlight was the first public performance of “To Bethlehem”, a beautiful and deceptively simple carol written by Warwick, Henry and Stella from Year 6 and Ruby from Year 5. Mrs Richards conducted the Upper Prep Choir and they were accompanied on piano by Warwick and Henry. The poignant “Mary, did you know?”,  sung by Tamikani from Year 12 and Bridget, Karen and Hannah from Year 13, was also a stand-out item,  while all the girls who did readings and led prayers spoke clearly and with great expression.

Boarders visit the pantomime

Oh no they didn’t! Oh yes they did!

It was magic at the pantomime and the boarders had a ball. They had gone to see a matinée performance at the Theatre Royal, Norwich of that old favourite story of Cinderella.

It was quite puzzling for some of our newcomers to see a traditional English pantomime with men dressed up as women, but armed with popcorn and sweets they soon entered into the spirit of it.1715952708

When Buttons announced that there was a party in from Hethersett Old Hall School it was greeted with a loud enthusiastic cheer, although we were seated quite close to the back the cast certainly knew we were there!

Finally, at the end of the performance, Khawla and Megan, who were both celebrating birthdays this weekend were wished a very happy birthday and sung to by everyone.

It was a fun afternoon and we managed to come back with all our shopping. We didn’t even leave a shoe behind.
