“We are stardust…”

Year 8 have been investigating fascinating facts about atoms and matter.  Did you know that the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our bodies were created in previous generations of stars over 4.5 billion years ago?  Humans and every other animal as well as most of the matter on Earth contain these elements…so we are literally made of star stuff…!

Year 8 Science: a great year!

From exploring sound through making their own musical instruments to growing microbes, learning distillation processes, bending light and undertaking ecological and biodiversity studies…Year 8 had a fabulous year in science! They even enjoyed some mindfulness sessions (you can try one of the activities for yourself here!)

Year 8 science: why your mother was right…

Year 8 have been using petri dishes prepared with nutrient agar to reveal the bacteria hiding all around us…. look at the microbes they have grown !

You can also link to a short video that demonstrates how quickly bacteria multiply from swabs taken from a TV remote –  proving your mum was right every time she said “now wash your hands!”

Felicity is latest Library Assistant

Congratulations to Felicity (Year 7) who recently earned her Library Assistant badge. Pictured here with school librarian Mrs Maher, Felicity undertook a variety of tasks to achieve the badge, including learning about the Dewey classification system for books. She now helps in the library when she is free at break times, mainly with issues and returns.

“I like the fiction section best,” says Felicity, “and because I love reading myself, I can sometimes make suggestions for what books other pupils might like to borrow.”

Learn to Swim with former HOHS pupil Jess Warner

Former HOHS pupil and swimming teacher Jess Warner is now running some of her Swimming Gems classes at our pool.  Jess recently taught Mrs Grove to swim for her Duke of Edinburgh’s Diamond Challenge. “She is a fantastic teacher and helped me overcome my life-long reluctance to swim – it was fun and I was thrilled when I achieved my ambition to swim a kilometre!”, says Mrs Grove. “I would recommend Jess as a teacher to anyone of any age who wants to learn to swim or hone their techniques.” Anyone interested, please contact Jess direct – details are on the poster  below –  or pick up a leaflet from the school entrance hall.
