Celebrating achievements at HOHS Speech Day

There was so much to celebrate at our Speech Day today – a lovely day and with perfect weather for the traditional family picnic on the lawns afterwards, too! A truly inspirational speech from guest Jo Cruse who used examples of young women who have become leaders in their field to speak to our girls about their futures ‘bursting with virtually limitless possibility’. She also spoke with candid honesty about the challenges and opportunities that accompany times of change – as she herself faces a crossroads. “I thought it was an amazing speech”, said Amy H (Year 11) “It was as if she was talking directly to me and understood my own thoughts and feelings, I was transfixed!”

Happy holidays, everyone!

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme hot topic at Speech Day

Guest speaker at yesterday’s Speech Day, Georgina Brigden – Operations Officer for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme –  gave an inspirational talk about the scheme, a theme echoed in the Headmaster’s and outgoing Head Girl Anna’s speeches. We are proud of our record with the DofE – almost all girls completing at least the Silver Award, building their confidence, self reliance and a host of other skills valued by employers and universities.

Miss Brigden presented certificates, cups and prizes to over sixty of our Upper Prep and Senior pupils, for achievements ranging from academic to sporting, music, drama and art.

In house competitions, Austen swept the board, winning the cups for Lower Prep Sports Day, Upper Prep Sports Day, Senior  Sports Day, Overall Sports Day, House Music Festival and the Robertson Shield for the school quiz! The Victrix Ludorum (athlete’s cup) went to  Amy Hayhoe (Year 10).

Speech Day picnic just beats the rain!

Today we celebrated arguably the biggest day of the school year  – Speech Day! A full report will be posted soon, but in the meantime, we wanted to share some photos of families enjoying their picnic lunches after the formal part of the day was completed.  Anyone who had hoped for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine over a couple of hours was disappointed though –  barely had the last sandwich been consumed than the skies opened, the thunder roared…and the marquee came into its own again!

We hope all the families who came to share this landmark event enjoyed the day.

Speech Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Speech Day and the marquee is up and ready and looking stunning in our beautiful gardens. We look forward to warmly welcoming parents and family members tomorrow – please take your seats in the marquee by 11.00am.

If the weather stays as lovely as today, the traditional bring-your-own picnic on the lawns afterwards will be wonderful! Please remember that the school closes for the summer at 3.45pm tomorrow and there is no day boarding.

Speech Day 2016

Thank you to everyone who came to our annual Speech Day. Following a catch up on the busy school year, some farewell speeches, the presentation of many prizes and a thought-provoking speech from Jennifer Lonsdale OBE, co-founder of the Environmental Investigation Agency, it was time to make the most of the sunshine and enjoy a picnic and afternoon tea out on the lawn.

More photos from the day will be posted soon.
