Rachel in Road to Wimbledon county quarter finals

Last Saturday Rachel Y (Year 8) represented HOHS at the county finals of the Road to Wimbledon 14 and Under Challenge County Finals,  held at East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club. Rachel played superbly, reaching the quarter-finals to finish in the top eight players in this age group in the county.  Well done, Rachel! She is pictured below with HOHS team mates following a victory at Hethersett Academy last month.

  • Did you know…?

The Road to Wimbledon 14 and Under Challenge is a unique competition which enables schools and tennis clubs throughout the country to inspire their 14 and Under players, with regional winners having the opportunity to play on the grass courts at Wimbledon in August.  Throughout the Summer Term, many singles matches were played at school: these established Rachel Y and Anna L (Year 8) as our school champions eligible to participate in the County Finals. Sadly, Anna was unable to attend the finals event.

Year 7 and 8 victory v Hethersett Academy

On Monday our Year 7&8 tennis team played against Hethersett Academy in their first league match of the season. The match format is four singles and two doubles matches.

Our team of Rachel Y, Anna L, Cristina M-M, Ashlyn G and Darcey W performed magnificently against a very strong team. Hethersett Academy’s number one player is ranked number 1 in Norfolk in the Under 12 age group.

After all the singles and doubles matches had been completed, in total six matches, the score was 3-3.

This meant that we had an exciting tie-break situation to decide the match: a  doubles tiebreak shoot-out, just like a penalty shoot-out in football!

Rachel and Cristina played brilliantly and won the tiebreak 10-5!

The overall match score was HOHS 4  Hethersett Academy 3.

It was an outstanding team performance and a wonderful result against a much larger school – well done everyone.

Katie Brooks’ award

We announced earlier that Katie had won the ‘Community Coach of the Year’ Award and lots of people have asked to hear more about this. Katie writes:

On Wednesday 12th November 2014, I attended the eighth annual Norfolk Sports Awards special ceremony at The Forum, to celebrate the county’s sporting achievements.

The awards ceremony was hosted by BBC Radio Norfolk’s Shaun Peel and the awards were presented by four of Norfolk’s Commonwealth Games stars, pistol shooter Mick Gault, wheelchair racer Will Smith, shot-putter Sophie McKinna and judoka Colin Oates.

During the awards evening, it was announced that I was the winner of the ‘Community Coach of the Year Award’! This award includes all sports coaches in Norfolk, ranging from athletics to windsurfing.

It is a great feeling to receive this award and to know that the people I coach appreciate the work I do and have taken the time to put me forward for this

I would like to thank all the pupils, parents and staff for their support and commitment.
I am profoundly honoured, thrilled and very privileged to receive this prestigious award.

Katie Brooks is a finalist for Coach of the Year Award!

logo_norfolkDuring half-term, I received some exciting news: I am one of just 3 finalists in the Norfolk Sports Awards Community Coach of the Year Award!

The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony at The Forum next Wednesday evening, hosted by BBC’s Shaun Peel, with Olympic and Paralympic guests.

Our school was also recently nominated for ‘The Sporting School of the Year’, thought just narrowly missed out on making the shortlist of finalists. The Active Norfolk’s annual Norfolk Sports Awards backed by the Eastern Daily Press and BBC Radio Norfolk recognises the cream of Norfolk’s sporting achievements and service.
