Recognition from the Royal Academy of Arts

Hockney + kids

Last year Year 2 (the current Year 3) created this beautiful painting based on the The Arrival of Spring by David Hockney.

I sent a photograph of the pupils with their work to the Royal Academy of Arts and was very pleased to receive the following letter back.

David Hockney – A Bigger Picture

You may recall that David Hockney took over the Royal Academy last Spring with an amazing exhibition of paintings, in different medium, charcoal drawings, collage, a variety of paints, and photographs, video stills and ipad drawings. It was a fantastic exhibition, displaying the ‘drama and splendour’ of nature.

The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011

I loved it and could see how the Year 2 (now Year 3) children would enjoy painting a huge picture of our own woods at school, with the path running through to the sports field.

So we did, through observation of our own lovely grounds and Spring colours, we painted a picture in twelve sections of our woods. The colours are fabulous and the simple perspective really easy to see.

The children painted the background and all the trees, and then drew and painted hundreds of leaves which, with some help from the sixth form girls, they cut out and stuck on the trees. That was a little tedious, and we all got a bit fed up, but the children were really excited to see their huge picture finished and on display in the hall.

We have photographed it and sent a copy to the RA, for them to hopefully send on to the artist.

Well done everyone!
