Year 6 class assembly postponed

Parents, please note that tomorrow’s class assembly presentation by Year 6 has regrettably had to be postponed because of the ‘snow days’ last week.  Mr Peace will announce the rescheduled date as soon as possible…the children will be working hard to make sure it will be well worth waiting for!

Year 6 ‘s amazing holiday homework!

Year 6 kept themselves very busy over the half-term holiday! They were set optional homework which included making a model of a World War II Anderson shelter; Maisy and Lydia impressed Mr Peace by including a garden with a vegetable patch! Via PowerPoints, an iPod calendar and verbal presentations, we also enjoyed finding out about our adventures in the holidays…the North Norfolk coast…London…Sweden…and we even located Isabella’s town of Clovis in California. Welcome to HOHS, Isabella!

Year 6 are electrically charged!

Year 6 treated the rest of the Prep School and some of their own family members to an excellent, entertaining  assembly this morning. With fun, practical demonstrations they explained what they have been learning about electrical circuits, hovercrafts and the Micro:Bits we reported on a couple of weeks ago here.  Whose wheeled light box would survive the rigorous ramp test? And who blew hard enough to get their hovercrafts off the table, even though the motors haven’t been installed yet?

Well done, Year 6 – and a big thank you to the parents and grandparents who joined us in the Prep Hall, too – we hope you enjoyed it!

Micro:Bit power for Year 6!

Year 6’s first computing lesson of the year was very exciting! We investigated the power of the BBC micro:bit – a simple credit card-sized computer that can be connected to a PC, laptop or tablet via a USB cable. We visited www.microbit.co.uk and followed a YouTube tutorial to discover that we could display our name on a scrolling L.E.D. display. It only took three lines of MicroPython code to do so and Mr Peace is letting us take the micro:bit home over the weekend to see what else it can do! Happy coding!

Tapas, por favor…

Year 6 reckon that language lessons should be fun, and have a practical – and if possible, tasty – purpose.   So, since they had been learning the names of different Spanish food items and putting them into sentences,  Mrs Barber thought it would be a good idea to try out ‘la gastronomia Espanola’ .  Judging by the facial expressions, some items were apparently tastier than others!
